Castro cult, culture first of all

A highly attended public event called CastroCult took place on Saturday evening at the cinema-theater hall in Castro. It served as a platform to present the diverse cultural activities planned for Castro in 2020. The event began with official greetings from notable figures such as Federica Esposito, the Vice President of the Province of Lecce, Gigi De Luca, the Director of the Bibliomuseale Polo of Lecce, and local officials Luigi Fersini and Alberto Antonio Capraro, the Mayor and Councilor for Culture and Tourism of Castro, respectively.

The speeches emphasized the commendation from the Province and the Region for Castro's remarkable efforts in cultural and tourism promotion. The collaboration between institutions was acknowledged as the driving force behind the significant achievements. Mayor Luigi Fersini highlighted the municipality's focus on enhancing cultural aspects, including the town's history and archaeological discoveries, to develop cultural and archaeological tourism. Alberto Antonio Capraro echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the transformation of Castro into an open-air cultural attraction as a means of benefiting each citizen while promoting the uniqueness of the territory.

Throughout the evening, various topics were covered, such as the results of archaeological excavations, upcoming initiatives, ongoing projects, funding, and collaboration with the local community. Councilor Alberto Antonio Capraro provided updates on several areas, including eco initiatives, the promotion of Castro as a city of art and tourism, energy efficiency measures, port area dredging, new trekking routes, infrastructure improvements, the establishment of a community library, interventions at the Archaeological Museum MAR, and the redevelopment of the archaeological park.

Professor Francesco D'Andria, the scientific director of the archaeological excavations in Castro, expressed his passion for the town and acknowledged the continuous discoveries made, particularly the recent findings of a marble statue and their scientific significance. He thanked the Municipality of Castro for their support and recognized the contributions made by numerous private donors, symbolized by the presentation of a parchment during the event.
